Staying the Course by Fred Wong

General Roberta Strock always reported in for duty at FemForce Headquarters a little bit before 7 AM, well before anyone else. Her first order of business was virtually the same every day, almost like a boring routine, consisting of checking her massive litany of email messages received overnight from various military agencies and groups. While reviewing all of them, General Strock was often irritated by the fact that the majority were frivolous nonsense from staff officers with nothing better to do with their time.

Today was different, though. Significantly different, for as General Strock passed through the security checkpoint and parked, she found a small entourage of four U.S. government sedans had already parked and waiting for her. General Strock exited her car, walked towards FemForce Headquarters and was greeted by a familiar face: General Richard Brennan, one of the top senior officers with the Inspector General.

“Hello, Rick,” said General Strock. “What brings you here this early?”

“We need to talk, Roberta,” replied General Brennan quietly. “In private.”

General Strock didn’t say a word as they walked towards her office, followed by an entourage of a few lieutenant colonels, a couple of full colonels, and several majors. She had served with General Brennan before, who was a well-respected officer with a generally reserved demeanor, almost to the point that he was cold and calculating on some occasions. It was the ideal trait for an Inspector General officer, charged with investigating and policing the Army from within its own ranks.

Once inside, it was just General Brennan and General Strock, while the rest of the staff waited outside.

“Coffee?” offered General Strock.

“No thanks,” replied General Brennan. “Maybe later.”

“So why are you here, Rick?” asked General Strock. “With a full staff, no less.”

“Roberta, you’re not under investigation,” explained General Brennan. “But what I’m about to tell you is classified to the highest levels. No one outside this building must know what I’m about to divulge.”

“What?” inquired General Strock.

“The current Ms. Victory, Jennifer Burke, was railroaded into the project through the manipulations of General Gordon and Captain Kelly,” explained General Brennan. “It’s all here from your review. Her husband David Burke’s firing, the cancellation of his insurance, his so-called ‘work accident’; it’s all there. Initiated and authorized by General Gordon himself and executed by Captain Kelly.”

“It’s shocking. I almost can’t believe it,” said General Strock as she reviewed the documents, consisting of memorandums, email exchanges, and transcripts from phone conversations between Captain Kelly and General Gordon. “I never liked Gordon and thought he was a blowhard, but I never thought he was dirty. Not to this extent, at least.”

“Captain Kelly hated his guts, too, but still followed his orders,” added General Brennan. “I think deep down inside he wanted the new Ms. Victory project to work as badly as Gordon did.”

“So what now? Where are they?” asked General Strock.

“Fort Leavenworth penitentiary,” answered General Brennan. “Several weeks ago we arrested them and tried them in a military tribunal for a court martial. To this day it’s still being suppressed for security reasons; it hasn’t been reported by any civilian or military news media.”

“And the verdict was..?” asked General Strock.

“Captain Kelly worked a plea bargain and only received 10 years at Leavenworth, in addition to the standard punishment of reduction in rank to E-1 and forfeiture of all pay, benefits, and entitlements as part of his court martial. Gordon, on the other hand, was found guilty by the military tribunal and sentenced for life at Leavenworth; the only daylight he’ll ever see will be his one hour a day in a small courtyard for exercise.”

“My God,” thought General Strock, thinking about Ms. Victory, and the living nightmare she had to endure.

“This report is for your files, Roberta,” said General Brennan. “But I don’t envy where you’re sitting right now.”

“Why’s that?” asked General Strock.

“Because I’m not the one who’s going to tell Ms. Victory everything,” replied General Brennan.

* * *

General Strock mulled over this for two days. Throughout her military career General Strock had the solemn task of informing spouses that their husbands were killed in action, and had counseled soldiers suffering the psychological effects of battle fatigue. However, nothing she ever did before prepared her for this, as the prevailing question haunted her:

How do you tell someone that her life was a lie created by the same government you swore an oath to protect?

* * *

On the third day General Strock sat quietly in the empty pews of her church. She made arrangements the day before with the minister and his staff to allow her access well before it opened for regular hours. Ms. Victory arrived as well, dressed in regular clothes as she entered and sat down next to General Strock, visibly concerned over the cryptic message she received on her answering machine the night before.

“How do you like my church?” asked General Strock. “I practically grew up here as a kid, you know. My mother sang in the choir and used to light up the whole congregation. She had some pipes.”

“It was very nice,” replied Ms. Victory. “A much better experience than when I was little.”

“You’re always welcome to join me again,” offered General Strock. “I think the congregation took a liking to you, also.”

“Thanks, that’d be nice,” replied Ms. Victory. “Why’d you call me here, anyway?”

“Did you ever sit alone in the pews after services?” asked General Strock. “Or when church isn’t in session?”

“No, I can’t say I have,” said Ms. Victory.

“My Dad used to do it, and sometimes he’d take me along,” explained General Strock. “He’d just sit in the pews, quietly thinking. No music. No prayers. Not a word. Just reflecting. In a strange way, though, it seemed like he felt a presence that uplifted him each time.”

“And now?” asked Ms. Victory.

“He and I still come here now and then to reflect, although nowadays I’ve been coming here myself,” said General Strock. “What I’m about to tell you isn’t easy for me, Jen, which was why I came here.”

“What are you talking about?” asked Ms. Victory.

“I read your background. You didn’t want to be the next Ms. Victory, but as the daughter of the original one, you were the only person who could take the V-47 formula, and General Gordon knew that,” said General Strock. “Even though you turned them down at first, you eventually accepted, because you and your family were practically destitute at that point.”

“I remember,” said Ms. Victory. “Those were hard times.”

“Jen, General Gordon and Captain Kelly manipulated your life to force you into this. I found this out three days ago by the Inspector General’s Office, and Gordon and Kelly are now in prison,” said General Strock.

“W-what…..?” said Ms. Victory in disbelief.

“Yes, Gordon and Kelly used their government connections to make you join. David Burke’s accident, the increased bills, everything, all driven by them,” explained General Strock. “They lied to you, and committed the most grievous of crimes in robbing you of your life.”

“Jason…” whispered Ms. Victory sadly. “…so what now?”

“Jen, the government has awarded you $10 million dollars for what’s happened,” said General Strock. “It’ll never measure up to the crimes committed against you, and for that I am truly sorry. If you leave FemForce, no one will question your reasons why, but I want you to stay.”

“Why….? What good am I to anyone? I only got this because of my mother. I didn’t want this responsibility. I’ve lost my husband…my son….” replied Ms. Victory coldly.

“Jen, you are the team’s leader. You’ve proven yourself again and again, and no one can question your loyalty or your leadership,” said General Strock. “You have no idea how much you impact all of us, both in your triumphs, and from your sacrifices. I can’t think of a better person I would want standing by me than you. Stay with us, Jen. Stay the course.”

Ms. Victory said nothing as she hugged General Strock and quietly wept.

* * *

Two days later, all was quiet at FemForce Headquarters as Rayda and Nightveil sat in front of the large network of computer systems while on monitor duty.

“Say, has Ms. Victory been assigned a new case? I haven’t seen her around,” commented Rayda.

“General Strock told me that Ms. Victory’s taken a temporary leave of absence. That’s all I know,” answered Nightveil.

“Weird. You don’t suppose she’s leaving the team after what’s happened, do you?” asked Rayda.

“I don’t know,” replied Nightveil solemnly. “If she did, I wouldn’t blame her.”

“Why the glum faces?” asked Ms. Victory humorously as she snuck up behind the two of them. “Can’t a girl take a couple days off?”

“JEN!” said Nightveil excitedly. “You’re back!”

“Well, technically I never really quit, but yeah, you’re stuck with me,” replied Ms. Victory.

“We wouldn’t have it any other way, kiddo,” said Rayda.

AWFUL GREEN THINGS FROM OUTER SPACE by Fred Wong

Hidden behind the dark side of the moon and away from the detection of telescopes and satellites, a small fleet of alien starships orbited the shadowy path around the Earth. Inside the command ship, Fleet Commander Crigen convened a final meeting to brief his battle plan to pillage the Earth. The alien force was none other than the evil Nyrians, long time opponents of the planet Rur, the homeworld of FemForce heroine Stardust.

The Nyrians were a warlike race, possessing a large, rotund appearance with green, slimy skin and hostile looking visages and bearing one eye. Renowned and priding themselves throughout the galaxy as male chauvinists of the highest degree of obnoxiousness known, skirmishes between them and the warrior women of Rur was frequent throughout history. Here and now, however, they focused their attention on the small, third world from the sun in a section of the Milky Way galaxy known as Earth.

“All is ready, sir,” said the Nyrian officer.

“Good,” bellowed Commander Crigen as he stood tall to brief his field officers, pointing to a three-dimensional hologram generated that illustrated his battle plan.

“As you know, we have identified a window in between Earth satellites and radar systems, a virtual surveillance dead zone. An advanced strike party will land there, a small island off the coast of a place the Earthlings call ‘the Pacific Ocean’, to establish our base. From there, we will be able to send down the heavier battle machines to establish our foothold for us to drive deep into the Earth’s core, drawing out its geothermal energy into our power cells,” said Crigen. “Within a few days, we’ll be tapping Earth’s core of primal energy.”

“Excellent,” agreed the other Nyrian officers. “With Earth’s resources we will have all the energy we need to obliterate Rur once and for all.”

* * *

Tara Fremont and Dr. Carol Hessler arrived at a small, uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean, as Tara landed the FemForce air cruiser down gently to prevent agitating the local wildlife. Dr. Hessler, better known to the world at large as the heroine Garganta, was the first to disembark, dressed in a simple set of beige khakis shorts, t-shirt, and hiking boots while Tara wore pretty much the same with the exception of her t-shirt being dark green.

“Well, here we are,” said Tara as she savored the crisp, ocean air.

“It’s beautiful,” commented Garganta. “I wonder why no one ever settled here.”

“It’s too small,” answered Tara. “Some ancient Polynesian tribes may have stopped here for rest as part of longer journey, but the island is less than a half mile in diameter. None of the trees here grow any fruit, either.”

“Well, when you put it that way I can see why no one stayed here long,” replied Garganta. “But you said that there’s something valuable here?”

“Yes,” said Tara. “You see, Carol, I recently read in a report translating old Polynesian chronicles telling about a wondrous herb that cured the sick. I printed off a scan of what the plant allegedly looks like, and was wondering if you could test a sample to see what kind of healing properties it had.”

“The ancient Egyptians discovered the healing properties of aloe, and even today we’re discovering rare plants in South America to treat cancer,” stated Garganta as she nodded to Tara. “Lead on.”

The two ventured into the jungle, searching for the elusive plant mentioned in Polynesian records dating hundreds of years ago.

“Why the interest in this island?” asked Garganta. “We must’ve passed another two on the way here.”

“They’re populated and being researched as we speak,” explained Tara. “But more importantly, this island is a prime candidate for being a new bomb test site for the Navy. It’s not an archeological site nor is it populated, making it a valuable commodity out here for the Pacific Fleet’s maneuvers.”

“And you want to make sure a possible cure for a disease isn’t blown to kingdom come,” said Garganta.

“Exactly.” said Tara as she momentarily stopped, visibly confused over a strange odor she suddenly detected.

“Do you smell that?” asked Tara.

“Smell what?” said Garganta.

“It’s like…petroleum…” replied Tara awkwardly. “Machines.”

“You said this place wasn’t inhabited,” said Garganta. “And the nearest Navy ship’s hundreds of miles away. Who could it be?”

“I’m not sure,” said Tara as she quickly removed her outer garb to her camouflaged bikini. “Wait here, I’ll check it out.”

While Garganta hid behind some trees and bushes, Tara stealthily worked her way through the surround jungle flora, concealing herself amidst the leaves as she climbed up the side of tree on a vine. Tara caught a glimpse through the leaves to see what was below, seeing what appeared to be an alien space ship around two hundred yards in length with strange, green, brutish looking aliens coming in and out of it as they were constructing something that looked like a generator of some kind.

“What on earth?” thought Tara as she eyes lit up. Suddenly, laser blasts riddled the tree as an alien on a rocket pack zoomed by, opening fire.

“INTRUDERS!” bellowed the Nyrian guard.

“Nyrians!” thought Tara as she leaped from the branch and grabbed a vine, swinging deeper into the forest to avoid detection. Tara had remembered seeing images of them from Stardust, but never thought they’d be on Earth.

Seeing more aliens rocket out of their starship in pursuit of Tara, Garganta immediately activated her powers, growing to around 50 feet as she stood towering over the palm trees and jungle flora. Garganta swatted away four Nyrians as they flew by in their rocket packs, knocking them down as they crashed down to the jungle canopy stunned.

“SIR! THE INTRUDERS! THEY’RE….GIANTESSES!” exclaimed another Nyrian guard.

“Hmm…superheroes, I believe they’re called on this world,” commented Crigen. “I want them alive…perhaps we can disect them to see that gives them their powers.”

“Yes sir,” said the Nyrian as he sent out the commands to the other Nyrian soldiers as they rocketed out the ship with their jetpacks to subdue Garganta. Setting their lasers to stun, several flew by Garganta and opened fire, raining beams of low-level energy that slowly began wearing her down.

“GET HER! SHE’S JUST A WOMAN!!!!” yelled a passing Nyrian.

“JUST a woman? Wrong statement, buster!” asserted Garganta as she knocked a few more Nyrians out of the sky. Tara then activated her own growth powers, rising to an intimidating 25 feet tall and began knocking the Nyrians around as well.

“Two of them?” said Crigen as he observed through the monitor as he ordered, “Activate the ship’s lasers and open fire, set for stun. Send in two more strike teams.”

As Tara and Garganta knocked several more Nyrian soldiers down, the barrage of stun lasers were starting to take effect as they were getting more and more worn down. What was even worse was that the weapons mounted on the ship activated and opened fire, releasing a smothering stream of stun lasers. Tara took the brunt of the blasts, dropping to her knees in fatigue as she struggled to fight off their debilitating effects.

“TARA!” exclaimed Garganta when suddenly another group of Nyrians emerged and opened fire, shooting streams of yellow energy that ensnared Garganta and Tara.

Tara and Garganta battle aliens by Fed Wong“UGH! TOO MANY OF THEM!!!!” grunted Garganta as the more and more energy bonds entangled around her, followed by another volley of stun lasers.

“GET….OFF…!!!!” yelled Tara as she kicked off two more Nyrians until finally another volley struck her, knocking her out cold as her powers deactivated, shrinking herself back down to normal size.

“AAARRRRGHHH!!!!” grunted Garganta as she strained to get free, until volley after volley of stun lasers impacted her, knocking her out as well as she reduced back to normal size. Tara and Garganta were sprawled out on the jungle floor below, as the Nyrians encircled around them.

taragarg“Bring them inside,” ordered Crigen. “And see to it that they do not escape.”

* * *

Over two hours passed as the effects of the stun lasers finally wore off on Tara and Garganta.

“Unnnnhhhh…” groaned Tara as she awoke, finding herself restrained to some type of lab table. Tara scanned around, realizing that she was inside the Nyrian vessel as Garganta began regaining consciousness.

“Ohhhhhh, my head,” muttered Garganta as she revived. “…where are we?”

“The alien starship, I think,” said Tara. “I can’t get out of these restraints…you?”

“No, I feel weak as a kitten,” replied Garganta. “They must have hit us with some kind of stun ray.”

Fleet Commander Crigen and his team of Nyrian scientists and guards entered. Tara and Garganta reviled at their hideous appearance and even more disgusting odor, turning their heads away in disgust.

“Oh, gross!” said Tara. “Slime creatures from outer space….”

“Silence, Earth woman! We are in charge now!” bellowed Crigen. “I am Fleet Commander Crigen of the planet Nyr, and you are our helpless prisoners!”

“How about untying us and we’ll show you first hand of just how helpless we really are!” retorted Garganta.

“I said silence, or do you wish to force me to stick an apple in your mouth?” asserted Crigen.

“Why are you here, Crigen?” asked Tara sternly. “Your group is too small for an invasion.”

“A wise observation, for a woman,” said Crigen. “But you are correct. We are not here to conquer, we are here to pillage, and in a short matter of your Earth days our construction will be complete, building our energy siphon to tap into the raw power of the Earth’s core.”

“You monster…” said Garganta bitterly.

“Sir,” said a Nyrian soldier as he entered, bringing in a console piece taken from the FemForce air cruiser Tara and Garganta used. “This was removed from their ship located on the other side of the island. Some of the technology indicates Rurian design.”

“RURIANS????!!!” roared Crigen emphatically as he turned, glaring at Tara and Garganta. “Where did you get this technology?”

“We stole it,” said Tara.

“You’re lying,” replied Crigen. “I have seen your kind before on this planet. You are heroines and do not steal.”

“Who said we were heroines?” replied Garganta, building on Tara’s hastily concocted story. “We’re on the run from the law and stole that ship as a getaway vehicle. Why else would we be on this remote island?”

“Hmmm….your words ring some truth, but I still do not believe you,” stated Crigen as he turned and looked at his two guards and two scientists. “Keep them here and begin your preliminary tests.”

“Yes sir,” replied the four Nyrians as Crigen left for the ship’s bridge.

The two Nyrian scientists began powering up their various pieces of examination equipment inside the ship laboratory. Cold sweat formed on both Tara and Garganta, seeing the various needles, probes, and blades being prepared by the Nyrian scientists as they sadistically grinned in eager anticipation.

Without warning, the lights went out in the laboratory, going completely black as Tara and Garganta struggled against the restraints, overhearing the sounds of punching and something slamming hard into the metal wall of the ship’s lab. When the lights reactivated, Tara and Garganta were surprised to see none other than She-Cat standing on top of the unconscious Nyrian guards and scientists, wiping off the slime from her hands with a cloth.

“Gross, couldn’t you have been captured by someone clean for a change?” replied She-Cat as she freed them.

“We’ll take that under advisement next time,” replied Tara as she sat up and got off the table.

* * *

Outside, Stardust and Ms. Victory were spearheading a surprise attack on the Nyrians. Stardust shot apart the ship’s weapon systems with a barrage of well-placed starbolts while Ms. Victory shredded the energy siphon components as she knocked the Nyrians back with large chunks of machinery.

Nightveil was flying overhead as well, unleashing a rain of magic blasts that shorted out the Nyrian’s rocket packs, making them crash back onto the ground like broken toy planes. Rayda hurtled a barrage of lightning at the ship’s engines, blasting it to slag within minutes followed by their communication antenna.

“SIR!” exclaimed a beleaguered Nyrian soldier. “Our defenses are completely down and have no way of talking to the rest of the fleet! What do we do?”

“Scramble all remaining teams for a counter strike,” ordered Crigen.

“Sir, we have NOTHING left!” said the Nyrian as the front console shorted out. “Our soldiers have been beaten and the ship’s weapons are destroyed….!”

Crigen glared bitterly out the window, seeing Stardust, a hated Rurian, fly again and again past them as she fired another starbolt against the remaining Nyrians. Crigen could also hear the exterior hull being ripped apart as Ms. Victory was forcing her way inside.

“We have no choice,” said Crigen angrily as he pulled out a small tool and tied a white cloth to it. Following what he knew of Earth customs, Crigen waved his makeshift white flag outside the canopy for all to see.

* * *

For the next several hours the Nyrians were being escorted to a small escape pod to be returned to their fleet under the eye of FemForce and a small retinue of troops called in from Rur. Crigen said nothing, ashamed by how badly beaten he and his forces were at the hands of some super-powered Earth women.

“So how did you get here so fast?” asked Tara. “We weren’t supposed to report in for hours.”

“Well, when those aliens found your cruiser, they must’ve tinkered with it, because a silent alarm kicked off and transmitted a distress signal back to headquarters,” explained Ms. Victory. “It didn’t take long to scramble a team together for Nightveil to teleport us over here.”

“So that’s how She-Cat got inside,” deduced Garganta. “I was wondering how it happened.”

“Well, whatever the case, they won’t be bothering Earth,” stated Stardust.

“Good. It’s going to take me at least an hour in the tub to get the stink off of me,” replied She-Cat.

“She-Cat, you actually touched one of those slimy Nyrians?” asked Stardust.

“Yeah, why?” asked She-Cat.

“Then I was wrong about you,” teased Stardust. “You really do have a stronger stomach than I.”

“Come out!” Isis shouted. “Come out tiny ones and see who will change this land!” Still on her knees, she stretched out over the city planting her colossal arms down beyond the wall on the opposite side of the city. Her gigantic torso formed a huge roof over the tiny dwellings.

She looked down at the small people. “Not much bigger than ants!” she thought. They, on the other hand, could not believe the scale of this beautiful giantess! Her eyes were the size of small ponds. Her hair, draping down onto some of the taller structures, looked like ropes! Her nostrils were like massive caves. Even her breasts and cleavage looked like a canyon! The tallest structure in the city would just barely clear her ankles! She was a goddess! All those lights in the sky announced her arrival. She would either save them or destroy them. They did not have to wait long to find out. Her words were thunder that shook the very ground they stood on.

“Tomorrow is a new beginning!” she said, “And I will bring it! I am your goddess Isis! From this moment on, my word is law and you will obey me or you will suffer a terrible fate.”

To make her point known, Isis reached over to a two-story structure she knew to be the city’s armory. She laid her massive hand on top and pushed down. With very little resistance, it disappeared in a great cloud of dust. Anything and anyone inside was pushed flat into the ground.

Smiling at the cowering insects under her she proclaimed, “All of the men in this city will build a temple to honor me, and all women will be honored by the men! Any crimes against a woman will be dealt with by me! Uukbah will be the head priest of my temple and oversee its construction. He will bring any grievances to me!”

Satisfied that her words struck fear into their hearts, Isis stood up to her full height. Looking down upon the small dwellings at her feet, she felt invincible. She turned and walked off into the night. Isis walked only for a short distance in the desert, just far enough to crouch down behind some mountains, not to be seen by anyone. The moon was now high overhead and the streaks of light in the sky were beginning to fade. She opened her fist. The crystal stone was glowing brightly. Her dream would have to stay with her she thought, but how? She was tired and hungry too. At her feet was a small stream and nearby some fruit laden trees seemed to be growing. However, at her height, it was difficult to see just what kind of fruit it was. For once, she wished she were not so big. Just then that strange tingling feeling returned and the ground seemed to suddenly rush up at her.

Looking around, Isis panicked. She was normal size again and she suddenly felt vulnerable. A quick check of her dress further confused her; it still fit her as it did when she towered over the city. This time it shrunk with her, but how and why did she reach ground level? The lump in her hand made her wonder and she opened her fist. Her dream was still there, glowing in her palm and keeping pace with her size change. She wondered a little more. Looking over to some trees, she spotted one laden with figs. Walking over to the tree, she thought of an experiment. Isis closed her eyes and thought of the top of the tree. The tingling sensations returned and went. She opened her eyes and laughed, Isis was slightly taller than the tree! “My dream works when I want it to!” she thought. Feeling invincible once again, she calmly inserted her dream deep into her cleavage to free her hands to pick fruit. Even with the stone crystal resting in its new place, Isis found she could change size at will. She ate, she washed, and she slept. The new beginning will start tomorrow after all.

Chapter 7

The next two years saw great change and incredible events to behold. Isis roamed the lower kingdom proclaiming her commands and laws. Her usual tactic was the same she had employed at Oasis City. She appeared before any major settlement at a mind-boggling size announcing her intentions. This was followed by a brief demonstration of her power. Any military structure was crushed or stomped on. She would then demand a temple to be built to honor her. The entire lower kingdom was easily persuaded to follow her wishes. They really had no choice. Isis wanted to join the lower and upper kingdoms of Egypt into one land. This would end the wars and bring more resources available to the people. However, the Northern Kingdom was going to be much more resistant to change. Their rulers had declared themselves to be gods over their years in power. The populace firmly believed that their king, their god, had a divine power to be a ruler of the kingdom.

When Isis made her way into the upper kingdom, the smaller settlements easily accepted her. A couple of the larger cities sent out troops to repel her but a few quick stomps from her huge feet and a massive fist plowing into the larger structures and city walls, usually convinced the inhabitants she was not to be disobeyed. When Isis began her approach to the seat of power, the largest city in the upper kingdom, an entire army was there to greet her. Their god ruled this land and he was not about to hand over rule to a woman, not even a giant one!

The palace-city to the northern kingdom sat at one end of a wide valley near the Nile River. Isis was approaching from the other end. She was about as tall as eight good sized palm trees stacked on top of each other. Between her and the city was an army of sixty thousand men. To her, it looked like locusts covering the ground. As she stopped to survey this multitude, the horde of men instantly rushed to the attack. Although they were intimidated by her size, the soldiers were confident that she could be defeated. Their god-king had assured them that they would be triumphant. His promise of victory was all the courage they needed in battle. Isis stood still when she was rushed. A wave of small, tiny men surrounded her feet, stabbing, poking, and slashing. None of their weapons penetrated her skin. At her present height, her skin was thicker and stronger than an elephant’s hide. The little men around her were just too weak to make their weapons effective. A cloud of arrows filled the sky. Some of the arrows stuck into the silk of her outfit. Isis watched with a bemused smile as tiny men climbed her feet and little chariots rushed forward with long lances and spears, all trying desperately to draw blood.

Isis defiantly put her hands on her hips and moved her right foot forward. In one small step, she crushed ten men! In another step she crushed twelve more, yet they still came at her. Bending down, Isis grabbed a handful of wriggling men and crushed them in her grip. She was starting to enjoy this! Ropes and grappling hooks snagged her skirt, top, and hair. Soldiers began to climb up her legs and torso. She immediately stood back up and began flicking the tiny men off her body like she would an insect. Some of the bodies would fly for quite a distance. Isis smiled and giggled at the attempts of the little men struggling to conquer her, this was turning out to be fun! The soldiers kept up the attack, as they were most fanatical. Despite her stomping and crushing, they still had faith in their king’s promise of her defeat. An arrow managed to land in Isis’s right eye causing instant discomfort. Out of reflex, Isis instinctively closed her eyes and snapped her head to the side. This caused her to lose her balance and fall backwards. Fifty men were crushed when she landed on her rear end. She almost fell all the way to her back but caught herself with her arms and elbows.

A massive cheer went up among the army; they had brought her down! Soldiers rushed her flanks from all sides, grabbing anything for a handhold and climbing on her. Isis quickly rose to her feet and shook off most of the men. Others that were hanging onto her clothes and hair, she flicked off or crushed one at a time between her fingers. She managed to remove the irritating arrow in her eye. As soon as she did this she felt more arrows strike her face. They were trying to blind her, a smart tactic, she thought, since she seemed invincible to the tiny army. The soldiers also tried lighting bales of straw around her feet to burn her. All she did was stomp out the small flames and flatten some men in the process. Although she found this resistance amusing, Isis was beginning to get bored by it all. She looked far down the valley at the city where she knew their small king would be watching the battle. It was time to show him and the northern kingdom her power.

The king jumped back in shock from his vantagepoint high up on his palace roof. Just moments ago, he watched gleefully as his men took down that monstrous woman who dared to call herself a goddess. Now he looked on in total bewilderment as Isis grew, and grew, and grew! When she stopped growing, even he seemed to be looking up at her from this great distance. She was taller than the mountains bordering the valley! He watched in horror as Isis lifted a massive foot and brought it down on his army. Hundreds died at a time as Isis stomped on the soldiers. Every time her foot fell, the king would feel his palace tremble. When it was over, a great cloud of dust hung about her feet. The king did not see any of his men come out of it. His army, sixty thousand of his best troops, was decimated with a few stomps from a giant woman! Isis had a big grin on her face as she started forward. This was the largest she had ever grown. The whole world seemed to be laid at her feet like a multicolored carpet! That insignificant army was stepped on like so many ants, now it was time to destroy the anthill. At her present size, the palace-city was not very far away. She reached it in just five steps. This city was eight times the size of her oasis city in the south kingdom. However, she was so huge that she easily straddled it. The king stood paralyzed with fear on his palace roof as a massive hand that blotted out the sun reached for him.

Isis easily identified the palace at the heart of the city. She reached down and carefully dug her hand into the very earth the palace rested on. Isis brought her little prize up close to her face to examine it. In her hand rested the entire palace to the northern kingdom! She laughed as she looked over the tiny structures and thought about the bumpy ride she must have given the king. “I am your goddess.” She yelled. “I have come to change this land and your lives. You will obey me!” With that statement, Isis slowly crushed the palace complex in her hand as if it were a dry leaf. She then scattered its remains out over the city. Looking down, Isis gave a frown and commanded. “Everyone will leave this place for I will destroy it!” Everyone ran, terrified of the colossal woman standing over the city. The fact that their once vaunted army was now flattened into the valley floor and a tremendous crater exists where a massive palace once stood gave encouragement to many to leave without stopping to grab belongings. Although Isis waited a time to give most of the populace a chance to flee, death would still come to many.

Isis knelt down and dragged her huge fingers across the tiny structures, reveling at the destruction she was causing. She was in no hurry and found many different ways to crush, squeeze, and pulverize the buildings. She blew a great wind onto the city causing even the heaviest of stones and brick to be blasted away. All that was left when she was done was rubble. Not a single foundation was recognizable but even this was not enough. Isis then stood up and stomped her massive feet, crushing the city’s remains into dust. When she was done shaking the earth, Isis walked a distance along the Nile. Even its mighty waters were a mere trickle to her. In a lush, green plain, Isis stopped and drew a great circle in the earth. Her tremendous finger gouging out an enormous trench. She then announced, “This will be the site of the new palace for both upper and lower kingdoms. A great city will be built here and from it my decree will make this unified land prosperous. You will call this city Memphis. Today a new era begins in this land!” Isis was happy. Everything was going to plan. She even felt the satisfaction of avenging her fathers’ death and naming the new city after him!

Chapter 10

Part 2: A GODDESS RETURNS

“Ouch! Damn, damn, damn!” Echoed out of a hole in the wall of a deep, wide trench. Spilling out into the sunlight after the curses was a dust-covered individual rubbing her head. Iris felt the tiny bump on her head. “I really have to learn to wear some head gear when I’m in these tombs.”

She straightened up, brushed herself off and prepared to reenter the darkness when a voice from up top startled her. “Hello my desert flower!”

Iris looked up and yelled. “I am not your desert flower and what are you doing on my dig you cretin!”

Iris climbed up out of the trench and faced her visitor, it was William Publicher, an archeologist she despised. “I have come to congratulate you on your find here last week. It is not often anyone finds a complete tomb site with all of its wonderful treasures intact.”

“Thank you.” Iris said with some surprise.

“However.” Publicher continued. “I am sorry to inform you that because of the importance of this find, the museum has decided to assign a new team to take over the tomb.”

“What!” Yelled Iris. “And what is the reason for this action?”

“Why, for your security.” He explained. “The mummy and larger items that were removed for inspection over the weekend prove that this was the tomb of a very high official. Also, everything is remarkably preserved, if word gets out, there could be attempts by looters to steal artifacts.”

Iris shook her head. “Security was never a problem in the past at this location. It sounds like a pretty lame excuse.” Iris then gave him a funny look and asked. “Just who is this new team?”

“Why, ah, Dr. Inkyer, Dr. Pensiller, and myself.”

“I knew it!” Iris erupted. “I knew it!” She then got into Publicher’s face. “This is the third time you guys have bumped me from a dig. Its not…”

“It wasn’t my decision!” He said, cutting her off. “Besides, we are not taking you off the site, just this tomb. You can resume your work on the rest of the temple.”

“Bull!” Iris exclaimed. “I should be part of the team. I found it and I have the most experience on this site.”

“The museum has made its decision.” Publicher said with a frown. “If you were more qualified, perhaps even had a degree, the museum might have reconsidered.”

“Qualified!?” Iris couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “I know more about ancient Egypt’s religions than anyone here! My father taught me more than any professor at any university could even hope to understand!”

“Ah yes, your father.” He said with a smile. “He was a genius, an incredible man. I am sorry he is gone. I had great respect for him.”

“Too bad I can’t say the same about you.” She snapped. “Never the less.” He continued. “We will move onto this site tomorrow morning. Please be sure all of your equipment is moved out of the tomb.” Publicher turned to leave but stopped. He gave Iris a quick look from head to toe and added. “By the way, you really do look lovely today.”

“Get a life!” She said with a sneer. He smiled and walked back to his land rover. Iris rolled her eyes and shook her head as he drove off.

Iris stormed back to her tent. “The nerve of those idiots.” She said to herself. Reaching for her camera, she knocked over the picture of her father on the table. “Damn.” She said aloud as she picked it up and checked for damage. “They did it to me again dad, I wish I knew how to deal with these morons.” She sat the picture back down and paused to reflect a moment and then ran off to photograph as much of the tomb as possible before moving her things out.

Iris Clark was a beautiful twenty-three year old woman who was raised in Egypt by her father, Stan Clark, since she was nine years old. Her mother had died early in her life so she spent all of her years following in her father’s footsteps of archeology. Stan Clark was a very respected archeologist who spent a large portion of his life digging up ancient temple sites. However, one day he drove to a new dig he had started and was never seen or heard from again. That was four years ago.

Iris was awakened the next morning by the sound of trucks pulling up to the nearby tomb. She quickly threw on a robe and walked out to see what was going on.

“Yowza! Now that is a beautiful sight!” Said one of the men climbing out of a truck upon seeing Iris. It was one of Dr. Publicher’s associates, Dr. Brad Pensiller; another man, Dr. Mark Inkyer joined him. “More beautiful than an Egyptian queen,” he added.

Pensiller, Inkyer, and Publicher arrived in Egypt about six years ago. They always seemed to manage to worm their way in on the more exciting archeological discoveries. Iris despised them because they seemed indifferent to the history of what was around them. “Treasure hunters” is what her father had once commented about them. She even dated Dr. Mark Inkyer for a short time, until she found out he was sleeping around with a local belly dancer. Iris shook her head and walked back into her tent. She really was a stunner, six foot-one inch tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, and a figure that would put Jayne Mansfield to shame. However, it still annoyed her that she had no respect among her peers. To them, she was always the beautiful girl or she was not considered qualified. After a quick wash up and change of clothes, she walked over to see what the “men’s club” was doing.

“Don’t you think you have too much equipment for this project?” She asked.

Dr. Inkyer smiled to her. “Well, well, well, the sunshine is up early today.”

“Knock it off creep.” She replied. “I still think you three stooges have gone over board on this tomb,” she said referring to the three trucks.

Dr. Pensiller answered her. “The museum thinks that there may be more chambers undiscovered.”

“I already checked for that,” said Iris. “I dug extra test holes and ultra sounded the walls of the tomb. Besides, This guy looked to be only a high priest. He would be the only one there.”

“We know that,” said Publicher. “But we want to be sure and this is our responsibility now not yours.” Publicher could see Iris getting mad. He pulled out a box and an envelope and handed it to her. “I’ve been authorized to give you this to study. It is a pendant that was worn by the mummy. It was the only piece of jewelry found on the body. In the envelope are photographs of the wooden coffin the body was laid in. It was in remarkable condition despite its age.”

Iris opened the box. “I discover an untouched tomb full of gold, carvings, and intact stone tablets with ancient text and all I get to research is a lousy copper pendant?” Iris glared at the men. “That does it, when Dr. Akutra, the head director of the Egyptian State Museum in Cairo, returns in four days from his lecture tour in England, I’m going to report to him all of your activities these last eight months. He and my father were good friends so I know I’ll see some results.”

The three men were quiet; they did not seem to like what she had told them. “Sorry to spoil your fun,” she said. “Happy digging.” She turned and walked back to her tent.

Synopsis

* Ms. Victory, She-Cat, Nightveil in her Blue Bulleteer persona, and young adventurer Tara Fremont have journeyed to the Amazon to recover Dr. Jimenez’ Time Triangle and rescue Rita Farrar, the granddaughter of Rio Rita. Meanwhile, a villain named Rip Jaw is also seeking the Time Triangle for personal reasons and his origin is explained. The backup story is a tale from the future titled, “The Last Detective.”

Story

* In their search for the Time Triangle, Ms. Victory, She-Cat, and Nightveil (Blue Bulleteer) have been captured by a lost tribe of Giant Amazons. The “Gamazons” found the Time Triangle and have suspended it in front of their temple to worship. Dr. Jimenez is safe because he is thought to be the High Priest of the Time Triangle, but Rita has been sacrificed to the Time Triangle by being thrown into the open time portal. A criminal named Rip-Jaw is also seeking the Time Triangle. He recounts how he came to have giant steel choppers instead of teeth, hence his nickname, because his jaw was blown off when a heist he was pulling was foiled by Colt, the Weapons Mistress. Rip-Jaw wants to use the Time Triangle to go back in time and stop the cops and Colt from shooting off his jaw. While in the Gamazons’ Jungle City, Tara finds some rope which she uses to enter the Time Triangle while still being able to climb back out. On the other side of the portal, she finds a prehistoric jungle. A pterodactyl is flying off with Rita. Tara’s thrown dagger catches the dinosaur in the neck and downs it in a lake which allows Tara to rescue the Latin operative. Meanwhile, the Femforcers are about to be thrown through the portal when Rip-Jaw attacks the jungle city. Tara and Rita climb back up through the portal, bringing with them several prehistoric animals. The chaos allows the Femforce to escape, saving Rita and Dr. Jimenez while recovering the Time Triangle. Rip-Jaw, initially captured by the Gamazons during the confusion, also ultimately escapes and vows that the Time Triangle will still be his.

1. Rip-Jaw plows through the Gamazons and Dinosaurs far too easily

Art

* Cover – Ms. Victory, She-Cat, Tara, and the Blue Bulleteer with Rip-Jaw in the background. This is the cover that caught my eye and caused me to pick an unknown comic book up off the shelf of the comic book shop lo those many years ago in Bloomington, Indiana.
* Splash Page – Ms. Victory, She-Cat, and the Blue Bulleteer are menaced by spear tips and axes.
* I really liked -
1. The Cover
2. The Splash Page
3. The panels where Rita and Tara went through the time portal
4. The sweaty Jungle Girl shocked to see Rita being carried off by a pteradactyl
5. Tara diving into the water and then the underwater scene of her pulling the unconscious Rita to safety
6. The Blue Bulleteer shooting off a portion of the Amazon Queen’s headdress to show her the gun’s capabilities

Colt

colt1Created by Don Secrease, Colt appeared in her first special for AC Comics in 1985. The Weapons Mistress has been a fan favorite ever since. If you’re unfamiliar with the character, here’s how she was introduced oh so many years ago:

“Valencia Kirk, daughter of a military arms expert and married to a government spy, started off collecting weapons as a hobby. That led to her being trained in the use of such weapons and eventually to joining in her husband’s occupation. Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Kirk were the most successful husband/wife spy team in the ‘department’…until Kevin was murdered while investigating a criminal sect called The Pact. Quitting the ‘department’ and seeking a new life for herself, Valencia swears vengeance against all evil as…Colt, the Weapons Mistress!”

The pint-sized pistolera was called in to lead the Femforce at the end of issue 9 when Ms. Victory was forced to take the unstable V-45 drug and became the original Rad. She served in that capacity for about 20 issues until she was forced out of her position as team leader in favor of Jennifer Burke, Ms. Victory’s daughter, because General Gordon found her to be too independent for him to control. She took her ouster hard but resumed her role as a private investigator and spy for the Government.

However, her spirit could not rest and she has gained power over fire, the instrument of her demise. Efforts are underway to make her a part of the Femforce team, although Gen. Ms. Victory

Joan Wayne, a.k.a., Ms. Victory, was first published by Holyoke Comics back in 1941. Then known as Miss Victory, she battled crime and the Nazis as one of the first patriotic superheroines of her day. In fact, she pre-dates the appearance of Wonder Woman by several months.

Almost 40 years after Holyoke ceased publishing her adventures, she reappeared as the leader of the Femforce. Under Bill Black’s hands, she has gained far more notoriety and popularity now then she ever had back in the 40’s. She’s the leader of the Femforce and the glue that holds the divergent personalities of the team together.

In 1942, a 27-year-old Joan Wayne was working as a biochemist at a government sponsored lab with a team of scientists working to create a super-soldier formula. When a government operative named Dan Barton ignored protocols and took a dose of the unstable V-45 drug, he became a paranormal but rapidly degenerated into a raving paranoid who had to be captured and placed in stasis until a cure could be found. The setback almost ended the project, but Wayne made a breakthrough and invented V-47, a super vitamin that would alter physiology and boost it to paranormal levels for a temporary period. Unwilling to risk testing it on anyone else after what had happened to Barton, Wayne took the drug herself and entered the war effort as Miss Victory.

HISTORY

Holyoke and WWII

From AC Comics Golden Age Miss Victory SpecialWith this panel, the first adventure in Miss Victory’s illustrious career was launched. The story, published in Captain Fearless No. 1, August 1941, was drawn by an unknown artist. Charles M. Quinlan took over the art for her second appearance a month later, and Alberta Tews was credited with the story. Quinlan would draw the adventures of Ms. Victory from 1941 until 1944. With a new artist came a costume change.

AC COMICS

In 1942, Joan Wayne tested her breakthrough super-vitamin, V-47, on herself, as she was unwilling to put anyone else at risk of developing the dangerous side effects that had resulted from the use of the precursor drug, V-45. The V-47 changed her physiology and gave her unprecedented strength, invulnerability, and the power of flight. The effects were temporary, however, and she constantly needed to take the drug in order to maintain her paranormal abilities.

With her new super-powers, Joan Wayne entered the war effort as the costumed Miss Victory and, after saving the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, she received official sanction to form an all-women team of paranormals, code-named the Femforce. First, the latin spy, Rio Rita, and the crimefighting Blue Bulleteer, joined the Femforce and then, finally, the bloodlusting She-Cat. The team continued their operations after the war with some changes in the roster until 1987, when Miss Victory was forced to take an overdose of V-45 by the vengeful Black Commando. She was transformed into an anti-social renegade, who called herself “Rad.”

Ms. Victory

In the 5 years, before she was restored to her normal self, her daughter, Jennifer Burke, had taken over leadership of the Femforce as the new Ms. Victory. When Joan, returned to her role as leader of the Femforce in 1992, she donned the mantle of Ms. Victory.

Since 1992, times have been bitter-sweet for Joan. Her daughter, Jennifer, has taken over the role of Rad, causing Joan much concern. However, she no longer needs to take V-47 in order to maintain her paranormal abilities having become permanently 28-years-old as Ms. Victory. She recently married Paragon, Chuck Starret, and the two heroes are very much in love.

Ms. Victory is respected by every member of the Femforce as a superior tactician, an able leader, and an experienced combatant. She has an IQ of 220 and can fly at speeds up to 200 m.p.h. She can also hold her breath for over 4 hours, and she is highly invulnerable. There’s more, but she doesn’t like to brag.

Ms. Victory II

Jennifer Burke as Ms. Victory

Ms. Victory II

When Joan Wayne was turned into Rad by the Black Commando, General Gordon, the military liason for the Femforce at that time, decided that Colt wasn’t the leader he wanted. The Weapons Mistress was too independant and somebody new at the superheroine game might be easier to control. Besides, what the Femforce needed was a Ms. Victory, anybody named Ms. Victory. General Gordon determined that since the V-47 drug worked on Wayne’s particular body chemistry, the most likely candidate to be the new Ms. Victory, was Wayne’s daughter, Jennife Burke. He sent his aide, Tom Kelly, to talk the reluctant Jennifer into becoming a superheroine. Coercion, subtle and not so subtle, led her to accept the assignment. After rigorous training and the ingestion of V-47, Jennifer was installed as the new leader of the Femforce. Her teammates, who didn’t know she was Joan’s daughter, resented her.  Even after leading the Femforce in the Shroud War, she was never fully accepted.

When her mother, returned to her normal personality and resumed the mantle of Ms. Victory, Jennifer was relieved to no longer have the responsibility of running the Femforce. Unfortunately, circumstances were unkind. On the very day that her son was killed through the machinations of Alizarin Crimson, she found her husband, David, in the arms of another woman, and the other woman was Stardust, her Femforce teammate. She broke ties with everyone, her mother, and her former teammates, but she couldn’t break the ties to the military who installed her as the leader of the New Sentinels of Justice. Since her mother was now Ms. Victory, Jennifer needed a new name, and General Gordon chose Paragon, after the leader of the former team known as the Sentinels of Justice.  Of course, the old Sentinels of Justice were still around, and so was Paragon, and none of them took kindly to the newcomer “stealing” their identities.

Rad II

Finally, the accumulated stress of all her problems and responsibilities drove her to the breaking point and, in a climactic battle with the Fearforce, she snapped. She decided that she would adopt one final identity and free herself from her miserable situation. The Goat God, Capricorn, under who’s control she had fallen before, helped pave the way and she became Rad, following in her mother’s footsteps once again.
