Synopsis
-
A fragile Jennifer Burke, distraught over the loss of her son in the battle
against Alizarin Crimson and the Goat God, Capricorn, is forced to lead a
team of Vault heroes dubbed by General Gordon as the "Sentinels of Justice."
The only problem is that name's already taken. Yankee Girl, Kitten, the Avenger,
Jet Girl, Miss Masque, RedDevil, Black Venus, Captain Flash, and the Green
Lama are in the group placed under Jennifer's command but the original Sentinels,
Paragon, Nightveil, Scarlet Scorpion, Stardust, Commando D, Astron, and Astra,
aren't real happy about having their name taken out from under them. The
new Sentinels, unusued to working together, are quickly defeated by Darkfire
using her Mento Helmet. In the backup, Microman tells She-Cat the story of
his origin.
Story
-
Jennifer Burke lost her son in the battle against Capricorn and her husband
is in the hospital from the injuries he sustained. She blames her mother,
Joan Wayne, the original Ms. Victory, for the sorrow raining down upon her
and Joan feels responsible for the grief her family is suffering. Using
Jennifer's emotional vulnerability against her, General Gordon coerces her
into becoming the leader of a new super group he's forming using the heroes
revived from Dr. Weir's vault. He calls them the Sentinels of Justice, which
ticks off the existing members of that group, despite his statement that
the government has the rights to the name, and leads to bad feelings when
Scarlet Scorpion and Commando D get the news. Meanwhile, the new Sentinels
of Justice are called in to stop a shroud-like apparition threatening Bayport.
The evil behind the apparation is actually Darkfire using her Mento Helmet
and she quickly takes out Captain Flash and Yankee Girl using their fears
against them. The Avenger and Miss Masque are the next to fall, followed
by the Green Lama. The remaining Sentinels are in disbelief at the close
of the issue wondering how they will stop the Fear Apparition.
-
I really liked -
-
Ms. Victory's conflicted feelings about her crimefighting having adverse
consequences for those she loves the most, in particular her daughter and
grandson.
-
The developing strained relationship between the Ms. Victorys
-
The new Sentinels of Justice losing battles against the fear apparition conjured
by DarkFire's Mento Helmet
-
I didn't like -
-
The storyline this issue is mostly set-up and not much payoff.
-
The dialogue is a little stilted the first few pages of the issue.
-
A lot of plotlines are being juggled.
Art
-
Cover - Jet Girl, Kitten, Miss Masque, Yankee Girl, and Jennifer Burke.
-
Splash Page - Ms. Victory's packing some of her undergarments in a suitcase
while she converses with Tara who is sitting on a day bed. Tara looks pretty
good in her bikini, but Ms. Victory looks a little sleepy and uncomfortable
in her original costume.
-
Generally - Interior art is in color. The style is classic with multiple
panels, mostly closed, per page.
-
I really liked -
-
The Scarlet Scorpion getting into a bar fight.
-
Yankee Girl being turned into a chocolate candy statue about to be eaten!
-
Miss Masque tied to a chair by evil communists.
-
In the backup, Microman spends all his time looking at and talking too She-Cat's
chest.
-
I didn't like -
-
Sometimes the features are a little off.
-
All civilian women wear sleeveless, low-cut, short dresses with a sash around
the waist. Not a problem, visually :-) but even Target has a better selection.
