Part 2: A GODDESS RETURNS

"Ouch! Damn, damn, damn!" Echoed out of a hole in the wall of a deep, wide trench. Spilling out into the sunlight after the curses was a dust-covered individual rubbing her head. Iris felt the tiny bump on her head. "I really have to learn to wear some head gear when I'm in these tombs."

She straightened up, brushed herself off and prepared to reenter the darkness when a voice from up top startled her. "Hello my desert flower!"

Iris looked up and yelled. "I am not your desert flower and what are you doing on my dig you cretin!"

Iris climbed up out of the trench and faced her visitor, it was William Publicher, an archeologist she despised. "I have come to congratulate you on your find here last week. It is not often anyone finds a complete tomb site with all of its wonderful treasures intact."

"Thank you." Iris said with some surprise.

"However." Publicher continued. "I am sorry to inform you that because of the importance of this find, the museum has decided to assign a new team to take over the tomb."

"What!" Yelled Iris. "And what is the reason for this action?"

"Why, for your security." He explained. "The mummy and larger items that were removed for inspection over the weekend prove that this was the tomb of a very high official. Also, everything is remarkably preserved, if word gets out, there could be attempts by looters to steal artifacts."

Iris shook her head. "Security was never a problem in the past at this location. It sounds like a pretty lame excuse." Iris then gave him a funny look and asked. "Just who is this new team?"

"Why, ah, Dr. Inkyer, Dr. Pensiller, and myself."

"I knew it!" Iris erupted. "I knew it!" She then got into Publicher's face. "This is the third time you guys have bumped me from a dig. Its not..."

"It wasn't my decision!" He said, cutting her off. "Besides, we are not taking you off the site, just this tomb. You can resume your work on the rest of the temple."

"Bull!" Iris exclaimed. "I should be part of the team. I found it and I have the most experience on this site."

"The museum has made its decision." Publicher said with a frown. "If you were more qualified, perhaps even had a degree, the museum might have reconsidered."

"Qualified!?" Iris couldn't believe what she was hearing. "I know more about ancient Egypt's religions than anyone here! My father taught me more than any professor at any university could even hope to understand!"

"Ah yes, your father." He said with a smile. "He was a genius, an incredible man. I am sorry he is gone. I had great respect for him."

"Too bad I can't say the same about you." She snapped. "Never the less." He continued. "We will move onto this site tomorrow morning. Please be sure all of your equipment is moved out of the tomb." Publicher turned to leave but stopped. He gave Iris a quick look from head to toe and added. "By the way, you really do look lovely today."

"Get a life!" She said with a sneer. He smiled and walked back to his land rover. Iris rolled her eyes and shook her head as he drove off.

Iris stormed back to her tent. "The nerve of those idiots." She said to herself. Reaching for her camera, she knocked over the picture of her father on the table. "Damn." She said aloud as she picked it up and checked for damage. "They did it to me again dad, I wish I knew how to deal with these morons." She sat the picture back down and paused to reflect a moment and then ran off to photograph as much of the tomb as possible before moving her things out.

Iris Clark was a beautiful twenty-three year old woman who was raised in Egypt by her father, Stan Clark, since she was nine years old. Her mother had died early in her life so she spent all of her years following in her father's footsteps of archeology. Stan Clark was a very respected archeologist who spent a large portion of his life digging up ancient temple sites. However, one day he drove to a new dig he had started and was never seen or heard from again. That was four years ago.

Iris was awakened the next morning by the sound of trucks pulling up to the nearby tomb. She quickly threw on a robe and walked out to see what was going on.

"Yowza! Now that is a beautiful sight!" Said one of the men climbing out of a truck upon seeing Iris. It was one of Dr. Publicher's associates, Dr. Brad Pensiller; another man, Dr. Mark Inkyer joined him. "More beautiful than an Egyptian queen," he added.

Pensiller, Inkyer, and Publicher arrived in Egypt about six years ago. They always seemed to manage to worm their way in on the more exciting archeological discoveries. Iris despised them because they seemed indifferent to the history of what was around them. "Treasure hunters" is what her father had once commented about them. She even dated Dr. Mark Inkyer for a short time, until she found out he was sleeping around with a local belly dancer. Iris shook her head and walked back into her tent. She really was a stunner, six foot-one inch tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, and a figure that would put Jayne Mansfield to shame. However, it still annoyed her that she had no respect among her peers. To them, she was always the beautiful girl or she was not considered qualified. After a quick wash up and change of clothes, she walked over to see what the "men’s club" was doing.

"Don't you think you have too much equipment for this project?" She asked.

Dr. Inkyer smiled to her. "Well, well, well, the sunshine is up early today."

"Knock it off creep." She replied. "I still think you three stooges have gone over board on this tomb," she said referring to the three trucks.

Dr. Pensiller answered her. "The museum thinks that there may be more chambers undiscovered."

"I already checked for that," said Iris. "I dug extra test holes and ultra sounded the walls of the tomb. Besides, This guy looked to be only a high priest. He would be the only one there."

"We know that," said Publicher. "But we want to be sure and this is our responsibility now not yours." Publicher could see Iris getting mad. He pulled out a box and an envelope and handed it to her. "I've been authorized to give you this to study. It is a pendant that was worn by the mummy. It was the only piece of jewelry found on the body. In the envelope are photographs of the wooden coffin the body was laid in. It was in remarkable condition despite its age."

Iris opened the box. "I discover an untouched tomb full of gold, carvings, and intact stone tablets with ancient text and all I get to research is a lousy copper pendant?" Iris glared at the men. "That does it, when Dr. Akutra, the head director of the Egyptian State Museum in Cairo, returns in four days from his lecture tour in England, I'm going to report to him all of your activities these last eight months. He and my father were good friends so I know I'll see some results."

The three men were quiet; they did not seem to like what she had told them. "Sorry to spoil your fun," she said. "Happy digging." She turned and walked back to her tent.
